Chapter Ten

Leah rolled over in bed and turned off her alarm clock even though it hadn’t gone off yet. She didn’t have a need for it this morning. For the past hour, long before pink and orange rays from the sunrise began to filter through her bedroom window, she’d been lying awake, musing about her sister and brothers.

Typically, thoughts of them would have her tossing and turning while straining to come up with something more pleasant and less upsetting to fill her thoughts. But ever since Saturday night, when Zach had confided in her about the accident that had separated him and his father, and his desire to set things right, she’d been mulling over the situation with her siblings. Strangely, when she did, every once in a great while a tiny semblance of a good memory of them crossed her mind. Were there more, she wondered, buried somewhere deep within the hurt?

True, in her situation she was the injured party just like Ivan had been. But also, as it turned out, Zach had been hurting for years as well. Was it at all possible her siblings might be feeling bad too?

If her parents were still alive, no doubt they would be devastated about the falling-out between their children. Even though the two of them were now in the Lord’s arms, did they deserve to have their surviving family divided here on earth?

More than anything, it was the memory of her mamm and daed that made Leah push back the sheet and get out of bed. Hurriedly getting dressed, she brushed her hair, donned an older kapp that her mother had sewn for her and picked up her eyeglass case from the nightstand. Her first job, after padding into the kitchen, was usually to get the coffee started. But not so this morning. Instead, with a sense of urgency, she reached for the pen and pad of paper above the sink and settled in at the kitchen table.

Then, determined to write a letter and say what needed to be addressed before any more years slipped away, she donned her glasses and began writing.

Dear Edna, Henry and Jeremiah,

How are you?

She paused, not sure where to begin.

Maybe with the simple truth?

I know it’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other, but I’ve been thinking of you all. Before it’s much later, or too late, I want you to know that I forgive you for what you did to me.

Sitting back in the chair, she stared at the words she’d written. She tried to imagine her siblings’ reaction, and it wasn’t good. While it was everything she wanted to say, no doubt they’d perceive her message as an accusation instead of an absolution. It would only stir up the past once more.

Instantly crumpling up the paper, she took out a clean piece in its place.

She sighed at the empty page.

Then, gripping the pen once more and adjusting her glasses in hopes of seeing better, she started over on a different note. Maybe it was best to only address her sister initially.
